What is the squid game and what is it about?

As you already know, it is a South Korean series of survival and suspense. It premiered on September 17, 2021 on the Netflix online streaming platform. It was written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk. Since its premiere, it has become one of the best Netflix series, surpassing even "The Bridgertons".
This is great, but let's see what this series that has become so popular is about. "The Squid Game" focuses on a kind of contest in which 456 players participate. Each of them comes from different backgrounds. However, there is one thing they all have in common: They are heavily in debt. In this contest they have to participate in a series of children's games in which they can die if they lose. The prize for the final winner is 45.600 billion won (which would be equivalent to almost 39 million dollars).
How is the squid game played?
As we have already mentioned before, in this series the protagonists have to overcome various games and avoid dying in them. These are generally children's games, but with modified rules that make them deadly traps. Nevertheless, The most notable of them and the last of all is the one that gives the series its name: The Squid Game. But how is it played?
At this point it can be said that it is a very physical game in which there is only one winner at the end. It receives this curious name because its area is made up of various geometric figures that are drawn on the ground and that, together, create a shape very similar to that of a squid. Each of the two players plays the role of attacker or defender. There are two rules or missions that must be fulfilled:
- The attacker: You have to try to enter what makes up the drawing of the squid and touch the head of it with your foot.
- The defender: You must keep the attacker out of the drawing, or take him out if he manages to get in.
At the start of the game, the defender is inside the squid drawing and the attacker is outside. As long as the latter is outside, he can only jump with one foot. Once he manages to penetrate the animal's waist, he is free to walk normally. From there he must try to reach the circle and touch the square of the squid's head with your foot. In the event that the defender manages to knock him out of the lane, the attacker dies.

- Lee Jung-jae plays Seong Gi-hun (#456): He is a chauffeur who is highly addicted to gambling, especially horse racing. However, his fortune has not smiled on him and he has been accumulating debts. He lives with his mother and tries to support his young daughter financially. This is the main reason why he decides to participate in the game and thus pay off his debts.
- Park Hae-soo plays Cho Sang-woo (#218): It is about the head of a securities company who was friends with Gi-hun when they were little. He graduated from Seoul National University, but by the time the series takes place he is broke. In fact, the police are looking for him on charges of embezzlement, money laundering, tax evasion and late mortgage payments.
- O Yeong-su plays Oh Il-nam (#001): This old man has a brain tumor, which is why he prefers to stay in the game.
- HoYeon Jung plays Kang Sae-byeok (#067): She is a North Korean who fled her country. She agrees to play the game so she can afford a broker to find and get her family out of North Korea.
- Heo Sung-tae plays Jang Deok-su (#101): It's about a gangster who has huge gambling debts.
- Kim Joo-ryoung plays Han Mi-nyeo (#212): This woman is very manipulative and always tries to stay with the winning side.
- Anupam Tripathi plays Abdul Ali (#199): He is a Pakistani immigrant whose employer has not paid him for months. Since he has to support his family, he enters the game to get money.
