Roddy Ricch beats Justin Bieber with 'The box', numbers and lordship

One month after placing your disk Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial at the top of the Billboard Hot 200, Roddy Ricch has just won his first number 1 on the list of the 100 most listened to songs with the box. And as if that were not enough, I have done it in the same week that Justin Bieber announced his return with single and traps.

It didn't work for the Canadian to ask his fans to pull VPN and night sessions of Yummy in loop. Sonly It has earned him the second place of the most listened to songs. And that Roddy Ricch himself, in a show of lordship, asked his fans on Twitter to listen to the Canadian's song.

Roddy Ricch: A Star Is Born

Overcome the Christmas break / Mariah Carey everywhere, all the classic occupants of the Billboard Hot 100 returned to their place. Post Malone, Travis Scott, Harry Styles… Everyone? No.

In a huge neighborhood in Los Angeles (Compton to be exact) a 21-year-old boy had a plan. After three EPs and three Singles of his first album released in December 2019, Roddy Ricch today won gold on the US chart thanks to TheBox. The bad news is that the box in question is a euphemism for an automatic weapon magazine.

In other words, although the theme has a very interesting execution (and different from 95% of the rap that we can listen to today), his background does not advance much beyond the usual weariness of the westcoast: weapons, drugs and bitches. And also, to say it all, it would have been nice to leave out of the very interesting base of TI have box every trace of mumble rappin.

Still, it's worth paying close attention to Roddy Ricch's next steps. Although it is still very early to draw conclusions, the Californian could be on the path to emulate the surprising beginnings of his countryman Kendrick Lamar almost a decade ago with his shocking Section 80.

That we are in Roddy Ricch season is demonstrated by his collaborations with Meek Mill y Nipsey Hustle in 2019, as well as his three nominations for the 2020 Grammys. Roddy Ricch has also regained his first place this week on the list of the 200 most listened to albums. The last time an artist topped both Billboard charts at the same time was with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper thanks to the soundtrack of A star is born.

Justin Bieber vs Roddy Rich

There is the special circumstance that this week was the first in which YouTube views would be taken into account in the final calculation of Billboard. This way it is much better understood that Justin took not one or two or three but seven different videos of the forgettable Yummy.

Roddy Rich, on the other hand, has had enough with a simple video-lyrics. The rapper did not ask his fans to buy his song more than once. Neither did he ask them to let it loop while they slept or install software to convert their IP to American (and thus count it on Billboard). What Roddy did do was tweet the following three days ago:

stream yummy by justin bieber

Of course, if there is a clearer way to overcome a musical rival, we can't think of it.
