6ix9ine has finally been sentenced to two years in prison and five years of supervised release. After spending thirteen months in pretrial detention since he was arrested in November 2018, the rapper is expected to be released in late 2020, because after two years of sentence you have to subtract the time he has already been in prison.

In addition to 24 months in jail, Tekashi 69 will have to perform 300 hours of community service and pay a $35.000 fine for a total of eight offenses (including belonging to a criminal organization) that could have cost him sentences of 37 years to life in prison.

In reading his sentence, Judge Engelmayer said he did not agree with Tekashi Six Nine's lawyer when he assured that the time in preventive detention that he has spent 69 days was enough to compensate for the crimes he was accused of:

"Your behavior is too violent and selfish to make 13 months in prison enough"

Paul Engelmayer, Tekashi's judge: a demanding man

Engelmayer (who has admitted having a lot of fun reviewing the 6ix9ine memes posted on social networks) has carried out a very exhaustive review of all the evidence presented for the crimes of which Six Nine was accused, to later recall altercations such as the shooting in Times Sq (executed by Kifano Jordan Shotti ("It was pure luck that innocents did not die") or the very fact that Tekashi has pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Engelmayer recalled the first crime that already cost Six Nine a jail sentence in the past:

In your first crime, sex with minors, you said the same thing; that other older friends were having sex with the girl and that you were influenced by them. That excuse may have served you once. But it doesn't work twice.

Special mention deserves the judge's words when holding Six Nine responsible for an increase in the gang's violence: "Before you, the band did not fight with entourages of other rappers and they had no interest in going after other musicians," said the judge in statements collected by the Twitter user @innercitypress.

«I have no doubt that the cooperation process will have been cathartic for you. You deserve a very substantial sentence reduction and you will receive it, ”said the judge before confirming the sentence of 24 months in prison and five years of supervised release for Tekashi Six Nine.

Six Nine, accused star of the macro trial against the Nine Trey Bloods

The rapper 69, turned into a key government witness, was only one of the total of 12 men arrested in November 2018 (all members of the Nine Trey Bloods gang from New York) accused of, among other crimes, drug trafficking, organization of criminal gang and murder conspiracy.

Before reading the sentence, Judge Engelmayer reported that he had received two letters written by victims of 6ix9ine in a shooting in which they demanded that the young Daniel Hernández, 23, not be released. To these written communications we must add that of the aforementioned recommendation of the Government to reduce the sentence of Six Nine and also the letter from the mother of the son they both had in 2015.

Finally, the predictions that foreshadowed that Tekashi Six Nine would leave prison today have not been fulfilled. Having said that, Judge Engelmayer has indeed followed the criteria of the Prosecutor's Office and the Government, who recommended through two letters the drastic reduction of Six Nine's punishment in gratitude for its collaboration with the Justice in the trial of the Nine Trey gang members.

The cooperation of Six Nine, essential for the reduction of his sentence

The spirit of collaboration shown by Six Nine has been the fundamental key so that his sentence has been significantly reduced from 37 to 2 years in prison. Advised by his defense attorney and aware that he was facing the minimum sentence of 47 years in prison (later reduced to 37 but still extendable to life), 6ix9ine decided to fully collaborate in the Nine Trey macro-trial in February. 2019, three months after his arrest.

On September 17, 2019, and For a week, Daniel Hernández offered a detailed testimony about the inner workings of the Nine Trey Bloods. At various points in his oral statement, 69 even gave extra details that had not even been requested by the prosecution.

The Internet was not long in renaming the rapper with the nickname of snitch-nine. Although in the world of hip hop those who collaborate with the authorities have always enjoyed a bad reputation, everything indicates that Six Nine could manage very well to recover their musical career. Far from having lost status and fame, the 6ix9ine brand is in better shape than ever.

What future awaits 6ix9ine?

Just look at the enormous popularity that Six Nine continues to gain despite everything that has happened: their plays on Spotify in 2019 have surpassed the billion barrier, there are three documentaries about his life in preparation and the record companies continue betting on him: a few weeks after his confession in the Federal Court of Manhattan we learned that The rapper had just renewed his contract with the record company 10K projects for the release of two albums, one in English and one in Spanish.

Unfortunately for him, he will continue to have to live behind bars and the life that he sees for when he leaves prison will be, to say the least, complicated and dangerous. All in all, the drastic reduction of the initial request of 37 years that Tekashi faced has been very surprising. There is no doubt that Daniel Hernández has greatly benefited from his decision to collaborate with the authorities in clarifying responsibilities within the Nine Trey Bloods network. Two of the defendants in the same trial had received sentences of 20 and 15 years in prison days before.
