Biography and life of Saint Hilaria

Hilaria was born in the year 310 in the city of Comana, in Cappadocia, present-day Turkey. She was the daughter of a Christian priest named Theophilus and a woman named Philonella. According to tradition, when Hilaria was three years old, her mother died and her father took her to live with him in Tarsus.

At the age of ten, Hilaria decided to consecrate her life to the service of God and became a nun. She lived in a convent near Tarsus for a few years before going to live in the desert of Egypt. In the desert, she Hilaria spent long hours praying and fasting. She sometimes she even she went whole days without eating or drinking.

Tradition says that Hilaria was visited by angels during her stay in the desert and that they gave her the strength to continue her fast and prayer. On one occasion, an angel is said to have even carried her up to heaven so that she could see the glory of God.

After several years in the desert, Hilaria returned to Tarsus to visit her father. While she was there, she had a dream in which Jesus told her to go back to the desert and keep praying for the souls of sinners. So that's exactly what Hilaria did: she went back to the desert and spent the last thirty years of her life praying for sinners all over the world.

Hilaria died in the Egyptian desert in AD 340 or 350, although there are no precise records on the exact date of her death. It is said that his last words were: "Jesus, beloved son of the heavenly Father, have mercy on me."
