Biography and life of Saint Peter Higgins
Saint Peter Higgins was born in Ireland in 1869. At the age of sixteen, he immigrated to the United States and joined the Order of Saint Francis. After studying theology, he was ordained a priest in 1892.
Father Higgins served as an Army chaplain during the Spanish-American War and World War I. He was also a missionary in the Philippines and China. In 1924, he was appointed Bishop of Shanghai by Pope Pius XI.
During his tenure, Father Higgins helped found several Catholic schools and universities in China, including the Catholic Universities of Greater and Little China. He also worked to improve conditions for Chinese workers and fought against communism.
In 1937, Father Higgins was expelled from China by the communist government. He settled in Hong Kong, where he founded the Catholic University of Hong Kong. he died in 1940.
