What is the Kingdom of God?

When Jesus was called to begin his ministry on earth, John the Baptist announced that the Kingdom of God was at hand (Matthew 3:2). The big question is what is the kingdom of God?

To start answering this question we are going to define the word kingdom. It refers to the exercise of the royal power of a king or queen in a specific period and that occurs through the crowning of the person. This makes us suppose that the Kingdom of God refers to the exercise of the Sovereign power of God on Earth. This means that God had to personify himself and rule.

Now, according to this definition we are going to decipher if the kingdom of God meets these parameters.

When we refer to John the Baptist announcing that the Kingdom of God had drawn near, we can imagine a King approaching those who were at the Jordan River at that time.

The question is to scrutinize if Jesus was king at that time. For the Word of God affirms that the Lord, even though he is God, strips himself of his divinity and his glory in the person of the Son to give himself as a ransom for humanity (1 Corinthians 15:45-47; Proverbs 8:30; Genesis 3:22; John 10:18).

Philippians 2: 6-8

Let there then be in you this mind that was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not esteem equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, made in the likeness of men; and being in the condition of a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

The verse from the Book of Philippians clarifies the picture for us by referring to the fact that Jesus, even though he is God, comes in the form of a servant to fulfill the plan of salvation. As for whether he was crowned as King, being the true God it is implied to think that his crown exists. The time of God's reign is eternal, however, there is a prophecy that assures us that Jesus will rule this planet for a thousand years. In conclusion, he is a King crowned in Glory, who came to this Earth to serve and after his first coming, he will return in Glory and Majesty, as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah to reign.

Prophecies of the coming of the Kingdom of God

Now, reviewing the Old Testament, we can find the announcement of various prophets about how the Kingdom of God would come to establish itself here on Earth. Just as the empires that have been established throughout the history of mankind were prophesied in the Book of Daniel (Daniel 2:31-44), it is also true that in that same prophecy the coming of the Kingdom of God is announced to us.

Other prophecies describe in detail that it will be a kingdom of justice and mercy (Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:1-4; Jeremiah 31:27-34; Ezekiel: 36:33-38; Joel 2:21-27 ; Amos 9:13-15; Habakkuk 2.14; Haggai 2:6-9; Revelation 20:4-10)

If you really want to delve into the eternity of the person of the Son of God, we recommend that you read the following article on the Doctrine of the Trinity where we address the existence of the Three Persons of God in Unity.

By scrutinizing the Word of God, we specify that the announcement of the Kingdom of God was determined and Jesus came to preach that gospel to us. We invite you to know the message that Jesus announced during his ministry where he preached the good news for humanity. In this sense, it is important that you enter to know what is the sacred gospel of Jesus? (Matthew 4:23; Luke 8:1).

Isaías 11: 1-4

A branch will come out of the stump of Jesse, and a shoot will sprout from its roots.

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him; spirit of wisdom and understanding, spirit of counsel and power, spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

And he will make you understand diligently in the fear of the Lord. She will not judge by the sight of his eyes, nor argue by what his ears hear;

but he will judge the poor with justice, and will plead with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the spirit of his lips he shall slay the wicked.

Gospel of Jesus Christ

By reviewing the gospel that Jesus Christ preached, and contrasting it with the prophecies of the Old Testament, they clarify what the Kingdom of God is and how it will come to Earth (Matthew 6:9-10). A kingdom literally ruled by our Lord. It is not something imaginary.

Jesus affirmed that the Kingdom of God had drawn near. Obviously, Jesus at that precise moment and today is King (Luke 11:20). It means that the establishment of the kingdom of God begins there and that it will be consummated, after a set of prophecies that are contained in the Holy Scriptures are fulfilled.

After the crucifixion, burial, resurrection and ascension the Lord is crowned as the Worthy King, King of kings and Lord of Lords to whom every knee will bow confessing that He is Lord and Savior (Matthew 28:18; Acts 1:3 ; Luke 9:2; Revelation 19:16; Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11)

This is precisely the message of the gospel that Jesus preached in his Parables. A clear example of the message of the Kingdom of God is one of the Parables of the Lord that describes that kingdom for us. We invite you to enter the following link where you can discover the message contained in the The Parable of the Talents

Likewise, the Lord gives us a mandate and it is to go and preach this same gospel throughout the Earth. For Jesus will come a second time to establish his Kingdom. He will no longer come as a sacrificial lamb, but with Glory and Power.

The grand commision

The Great Commission is the last mandate given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a special calling that gives us Christians to go preach the gospel (the good news of the Kingdom of God, eternal life) throughout the Earth. This Great Commission is established in the Gospel of Matthew 28:18-19.

After receiving the Lord and declaring him, he orders us to preach the gospel in all places, times and people. Concretizing one of the most important Christian missions, in addition to receiving the Lord, is to be baptized, as this verse says (Matthew 28:18-19 Acts 1:3).

Conditions to enter the Kingdom of God

The first thing we want to highlight is that the salvation of our soul does not depend on anything we do, because it is a gift that God has given us.

Ephesians 2: 8-9

For by grace you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God;

not by works, so that no one can boast.

However, this gift is not for everyone. This gift of God has certain conditions, because not everyone who believes will have his entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Mattheww 7:7-8

21 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven: but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day: Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name did many miracles?

23 And then I will protest to them: I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.

To enter the Kingdom of God, Jesus tells us through his message that there are some conditions to receive this gift from God: repent, recognize and confess that Jesus gave himself up for our sins, be born again, obey and do the will of the Father , know God, Subdue the flesh (Matthew 19:16; James 2:19; Romans 6:1-23; Acts 8:17; Romans 8:9; Luke 6:46; Luke 9:62; 1 Corinthians 9: 27; Luke 14:26-27)

 Repentance

At the beginning of the Ministry of Jesus, he preached the Kingdom of God and his justice, however the first thing he said was that we should repent of our sins (Matthew 3:2). Repentance goes beyond confessing our sin. It is changing our way of thinking and behaving. That is, after repenting it is necessary to abandon the practices of sin (Mark 1:14-15; Luke 13:5; Acts 2:38; Acts 20:20-21; Revelation 2:16; 22:19)

Matthew 4: 17

Since then Jesus began to preach, and to say: Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.

Recognize our Lord and Savior

To reconcile with God there are two fundamental steps we must take. The first is to believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord, that he died because we are sinners and that thanks to his sacrifice on the cross we have been saved. This call is heard by the sheep of the kingdom. To do this, we invite you to read the following link referred to What is the Good Shepherd?

Many claim to be Christians. However, they do not understand that Jesus went to the cross as the payment for our redemption. If you believe in Christ you have already taken the first step. The second is to make a prayer. As Romans 10:10 says, we must say with our lips that we believe. Let it enter our hearts.

Romanos 10: 9-10

that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the deadyou will be saved.

10 Because with the heart one believes for justice, but with the mouth one confesses for salvation.

To raise this prayer you have to do it in the Name of Jesus. God's Word tells us how to do it. He emphasizes that we must pray everything to the Father through the only one who has the power and dominion to send our prayers through, Jesus (John 14:13; Matthew 21:22).

1 Timoteo 2: 5

Because there is only one God, and only one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ

Born again

When we repent, receive and confess the Lord as our God and Savior, Jesus said that the next step was to be baptized as a symbol of our death to this world.

Well, with this act we announce to the world that we die over our way of life; however, that is not easy. We must let go of our way of thinking and acting. Only this is possible through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we must make an effort to submit our thoughts, our flesh under the will of God; in other words, it is resisting the temptations we face in this world (2 Corinthians 4:11; Romans 15:13; John 3.3-6; Galatians 5:20)

Being born again implies being like children obeying and depending on our Father who is in heaven (Mark 10:15).

 Obey the Word of God

After being born again, it is necessary to obey God, because the First and greatest Commandment is that we love God above all things.

This means that a person converted to the Lord must search the Holy Scriptures to know the will of God.

 Matthew 7: 21

21 Not everyone who says to me: Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

During the ministry of Jesus, the Bible tells us the case of a young man from the aristocracy of the time, who approaches Jesus to ask him how to have eternal life (Mark 10:17-22; Acts 14:22; Luke 16: 16; Matthew 18:1-4)

The first thing that the Lord tells him is to obey God, to fulfill his commandments. However, the young man tells him that he already does that. The Lord urges him to give everything to the poor and follow him. The young man leaves sad. There we can see how this young man put his trust in his riches and in his own strength.

The principle of total dependence on God was violated in this case. Jesus clarifies the following

Juan 17: 3

And this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

This means that we must fellowship with God, search the scriptures (John 5:39) and pray as Jesus did (Mark 1:35).

After having defined what the kingdom of God is and discovering what this kingdom will be like, it is worth asking: Are you willing to live a life in obedience to God? Are you waiting for the kingdom of God? We invite you to see this message that addresses the kingdom of God.
