Oh Great Virgin of Carmen. Filled with the most affectionate confidence, like children who go to the heart of their mother, we come to beg once for the treasures of commiseration that you have always granted us in a very solicitous way. That is why we pray to You in all our risks and trusting needs to be kindly heard.

You are the Mother of glorious grace that preserves our souls immaculate; you are the powerful Tower of David that protects the honor and freedom of our nations; you are the shelter of sinners that breaks the chains of those subjected to error and vice; you are the relief of the afflicted, since you help the widows, the orphans and the homeless; you are the support of Christians, since you maintain our faith and protect our Church, in particular its bishops, clerics and religious.

From the seat of your glory, listen to our prayers, Oh Mother of Carmel! You leave your mantle open and wrap it around all our nations. We ask you for the right magistrates, parliamentarians and judges; for couples and families serenity and compassion, for teachers the sacred fear of God, and for infants naivety and for young people a Christian teaching.

Remove earthquakes, plagues and calamities from our countries, remove storms from our seas and grant fertility to our fields and mountains. Become the medicine of the sick, the vitality of sorrowful souls, the special protection of the evicted and the savior of the souls in Purgatory.

Listen to us most merciful Mother and make it possible for us to live allied in life to the expression of an identical faith and to the exercise of an identical love for the Divine Heart of Jesus, so that we can be taken from the earthly homeland to the imperishable homeland of heaven in which we love you. we will praise and bless for ever and ever. for a sick

My most adored Mother, Blessed Mary of Mount Carmel! To whom but you, who are the cure for the sick, the relief of the afflicted and the protection of the helpless, should I implore in this great need in which I find myself?

You know it well, my Mother, that by the divine disposition of God I have been suffering for so long with this unfortunate disease, without until today having obtained relief from medicine; On the contrary, my pains increase day by day, to the extent that I feel my little strength is running out and I lack the due patience to tolerate them.

I wait for your benevolent heart, oh Mary! that you pity me, and that you grant me the health that I need, because not in vain do I carry your Sacred Scapular on my chest, which is a pledge of your adored protection and universal remedy in the ailments of the soul and body.

In payment for this favor, which you will not deny me, I consecrate my soul to you with everything it can, my body with everything it feels; in a word, my whole being, so that you have me as something that is yours.

If God Our Lord, in his lofty judgments, does not want to grant me the health that I beg him for through your intercession, since perhaps it is convenient for his glory and my own redemption that I endure and suffer with this suffering, then I ask you, my Mother , that you grant me from Your Divine Majesty the virtue of serenity, so that with it I can endure my ailments with the meekness of a good Christian, and through them completely purify myself of all my faults in order to achieve eternal glory. Amen.

Although in all the prayers dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen the health of the sick is entrusted, it is this prayer that is particularly designed for them, since no other favor is requested that is not linked to the state of health of someone. , or of all the sick people in the world, so that they may calm down the pain or torment they are suffering.

The Virgin of Carmen

With the title of Virgen del Carmen or Nuestra Señora del Carmen is the name that Santa María del Monte Carmelo usually receives, one of the different mystical references of the Virgin Mary. Her name originates from the reverence for her on Mount Carmel, in the Holy Land, in the vicinity of Haifa.

The term Carmelo or Carmen comes from the word Karmel or Al-Karem and could mean 'garden'. The reverence of said Marian invocation has been spread throughout the planet by the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, better known as Carmelites.

In Spain, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica she is the patron saint of the sea, she is also the patron saint of the Spanish Navy. She is considered Queen and Patron of Chile, of her Army and of the Carabineros. She is held as the patron saint of the Police and the National Army, of sailors and drivers in Colombia. In Bolivia she is the National and Army Patron Saint; in Peru she is "Patron of Creoleism" and "Eternal Mayor of the City of Lima" and in Venezuela she is patron of the Army and drivers.

Additionally, she is considered the patron saint of the Army of the Andes which, led by General José de San Martín, initiated the emancipation of Argentina, Chile and Peru. Through this dedication, a name is given to all those people called Carmen, Carmela or Carmelo, and who celebrate their saint in the commemoration of Our Lady of Carmen, on July 16, which the Catholic Church celebrates with the quality of optional memory.

Origin of Devotion

The name of Mount Carmel comes from Karm-El, which means in Hebrew garden or vineyard of God. Mount Carmel is currently located in Israel. It is noted in the book of the prophet Isaiah 35:2 as a beautiful site. The prophet Elijah dwelt in a cave in Carmel. It was in this location that the prophet Elijah demonstrated the power of the Lord before the priests of the pagan deity Baal.

Her worship dates back to a group of hermits who, under the inspiration of the prophet Elijah, retired to dwell on Mount Carmel and by the year 1200 formed the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Carmelites).

According to Carmelite tradition, on July 16, 1251, the figure of the Virgen del Carmen had been shown to Saint Simon Stock, Superior of the Order, giving him a scapular, which is the most important insignia of Marian devotion. Carmelite, with which it is promised to free those who wear it from eternal punishment. The scapular was recognized by the Pope in 1587 and has achieved the support of subsequent pontiffs.

In the fourteenth century and also according to tradition, the Virgin made her appearance to Pope John XXII promising her help against his enemies if he granted a new consent to the Carmelites. The Virgin also promised the redemption of the declared Carmelites and of the devotees who carried the insignia of the habit or the scapular and made precepts of prayer and, if corresponding to her canonical status, of continence.

The Virgin would have to descend to purgatory on the first Saturday after her death to lead them to heaven, hence this got the name of Saturday Privilege. It was Pope John XII who authorized it in the Saturday Bull of March 3, 1322. A posteriori, it was also consented to by Pope Clement VII with the Brief Dilecti filii of 1527.

Mount Carmel is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jezreel Valley. The Virgin of Mount Carmel is also called the Star of the Sea (in Latin Stella Maris) and is the patron saint of sailors. Marian devotion to the Virgen del Carmen spread to many nations in Europe, such as Spain and from there to numerous nations in America, highlighting among them Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru , Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Then he provided the essence of love to his "panelas" (local cake), and dance rhythm to the shepherds, and seeing that man (Simón Bolívar) who would fight for our freedom pass through his real street, caused him to kneel before his death. image to beg for mercy and security. It was thus that years later the first Carmelite friars arrived on this land blessed by God.
