History of transportation in Mexico

In 2018 in Mexico, land transport had an increase in exports in the United States, which represented 12% compared to the previous year. What comes to suppose that land transportation is one of the means most used by most people in Mexico and also for international trade that we will be talking about primarily.

Since this means of transportation is one of the most useful in both the United States and Canada, who are the main trading partners in Mexico. But there is a slight inconvenience and it is that these vehicles are provided with all the required maintenance and therefore the mechanical failures of these vehicles generate higher repair costs and more time in the transport of the merchandise.

Types of transportation in Mexico to do foreign trade

Taking into account the history of transportation in Mexico, These are used for the import or export of merchandise and we can mention:

maritime transport

Which is the transport that allows you to mobilize large weights and volumes of solid or liquid products. In addition, it is the main means of transport for international trade.

 air transport

This is the transport used to move merchandise between two or more continents. Especially if they are of great value, in addition to the fact that this is faster, safer and easier to keep track of, making it ideal for special or urgent shipments.

ground transportation

And as for land transport, we can mention the following types that exist:

trucking

It is a type of transport that has different cars and that offers greater flexibility, since its cars can transport any amount of merchandise, of different types and the size of the load can vary.

Railway transport

The transport capacity of this is greater than that of a truck and requires less labor per ton / kilometer traveled for its transfer. But this transport is only limited to a rail network, so this is one of its limitations.

Multimodal transport

This type of transport is the one used to deliver the merchandise from its place of origin to its final destination. But using several means of transport to achieve the objective of moving the merchandise.

Normally this mode is managed by multimodal transport operators. Which are generally shipping companies, railway operators that are generally not the owners but that make a multimodal transport contract assuming the responsibilities for its fulfillment.

Evolution of transport and trade

When we talk about history of transportation in MexicoWe must say that this began in 1837, when the then president, Anastacio Bustamante, granted Francisco Arrillaga the authorization to build the railway from Mexico City to Veracruz. But it was not until the presidency of Porfirio Diaz that money and time began to be invested in the construction of new railways with the aim of encouraging foreign investment and trade within the country.

This plan came to be long-term, since over time the land transport of goods gained power, making the Mexican economy grow. Today the railway is no longer the most used method of transport, but there are other forms of land transport that are still used for this purpose.

On the other hand, road traffic continues to have the greatest growth with the use of articulated trucks that allow the export of goods and products both to the north and to the south of the continent. The procedure that must be carried out to achieve this is quite specific and it is important that it be carried out to avoid charges or future sanctions in the transfer of the merchandise.

The first thing that happens is that an authorization and reservation is received from the company that needs to export a good, then the export contracts have to be made and all the documentation that is needed for this process begins to be made. Then you have to go to all the logistics, as well as the inventory analysis, where you also get to design the land transport operation, such as the customs agent, insurance and the collection program.

To finalize this process, the merchandise is tracked, the payment is made and the delivery is made. This is a process that is a bit difficult but that, together with the advantages it offers, makes land transport one of the main means of transporting goods despite the lack of infrastructure in the country.

Among the advantages of land transportation, it is that this is the only means that allows us to provide a door-to-door service, since this merchandise that is being dispatched can be delivered directly to where the importer requires it. In addition, this is a cheaper means of transport with fewer restrictions when moving merchandise or the weight of the load, and in the case of clients with them you can negotiate the costs, the schedules to adapt to their requirements. .

Development of transportation in Mexico

Continuing with the history of transportation in Mexico, we can say that the boom that this means of transport had was due to the volumes of cargo that they manage to move, in addition to the ease that they provide to be used by various economic sectors and the large number of clients that are associated and do use of this service. Which makes it a fundamental piece in the supply chain.

In the strategic and logistical planning of cargo transportation for the Mexican Institute of Transportation, it goes so far as to say that 62% of national exports are carried out by road. Causing these calculations have made the Mexican government begin to look for ways to improve land transportation, in order to make it more efficient and increase its use to carry out this type of operation.

Over time, it has been observed that the main problems are in administrative management, since this reflects a lack of statistical analysis by the company, as well as sudden decision-making and the lack of policies or procedures for following contingency plans. And externally, the increase in fuel and its inputs has also caused the price of motor transport to rise and it is less beneficial.

This is why a National Highway Infrastructure Program 2018-2024 was created, where thematic tables are convened for the creation of sectoral communications and transportation plans. This is why intermodal transport, which is a mode of transport where several types of transport are combined and which is also widely used, does not take away the importance of land transport.

Due to this, it is sought that land transport be optimized and updated so that it is more competitive by combining its efforts with the maritime and air sectors, and in those markets in which other means are not required to transport the merchandise will continue to be the main means of transport, land. But having new highways that connect more points quickly and with less complicated processes to transport merchandise.

With this, what is sought is to make Mexico more efficient in the international trade market, which despite being growing considerably, can still take more advantage of the country's potential with the use of new technologies than by aligning them with plans and goals, further progress can be made. Just as it is of great importance that the government sectors that participate in foreign trade such as the Customs Administration can adapt to these measures.

So that they adapt to the changes and that they are not changes only structural, but also internal changes take place to really benefit the different sectors that come to transport merchandise. Achieving that the processes are facilitated, in order to promote the export and import of goods, with this we will ensure that the country continues to grow economically.

If you want to know the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of existing means of transport, we will leave you this video. So we invite you to see it in full, do not forget to share this data.
