Blessed Felipe Pappon was born in 1528 in the city of Genoa, Italy. He was the son of a merchant and his wife, who were very religious. At sixteen, Felipe was sent to study medicine at the University of Pisa. After graduating, he returned to Genoa and became an army doctor. Although he was very good at his job, he did not like the violence of the army and decided to leave it to become a priest.
Ordained a priest in 1554, Felipe was assigned to the parish of San Bartolomé, where he spent the next thirty-five years serving the poor and needy. He also founded an orphanage for orphan girls and a school for poor children. In 1589, when he was sixty-one years old, Philip was arrested by order of Pope Sixtus V for allegedly aiding heretics. However, no evidence was found against him and he was released after three months in prison.
After his release, Philip returned to his parish and continued to serve those in need until his death on March 9, 1591. He was beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1712.
