Prayer to Blessed Dominic Jedrzejewski

It is celebrated on August 29

Blessed Dominic Jedrzejewski was a priest of the Catholic Church and a martyr for the faith. He was assassinated in 1940 by the Nazi regime during World War II. Praying to this saint helps us to remember all the martyrs of the faith, especially those who have given their lives during the period of religious persecution. It also helps us remember that we must be willing to lay down our lives for our beliefs and that we must be faithful to the end.

Biography and life of Blessed Dominic Jedrzejewski

Domingo Jedrzejewski was born in the city of Poznan, Poland, on December 21, 1807. He was the son of the merchant Ignacio Jedrzejewski and María Teresa Kowalska. Domingo was baptized the day after his birth in the parish of San Esteban.

In 1815, when Domingo was seven years old, his family moved to Bydgoszcz, where he attended primary school and later the Jesuit college. In 1825 he entered the Bydgoszcz diocesan seminary. He was ordained a priest on June 9, 1830.

After his ordination, Father Jedrzejewski was assigned to the rural parish of Wysoka Wielkopolska, where he served for three years. He was then transferred to the city of Bydgoszcz, where he served as chaplain of the local hospital and later as parochial vicar in the rural parishes of Koronowo and Mrocza. In 1836 he returned to Wysoka Wielkopolska to serve as parish priest.

Father Jedrzejewski was a very religious man who spent many hours praying before the Blessed Sacrament displayed in his parish church. He was also very devoted to the Virgin Mary and spent many hours in front of the local Marian Shrine asking her intercession for his parishioners and for all of Poland. Father Jedrzejewski was much loved by his parishioners because he was a good preacher and a charitable pastor who was always ready to help those in need. He was also known to be a fair and impartial man who always sought to do the right thing regardless of the personal consequences to himself.

In 1846, Father Jedrzejewski was appointed Vicar General of Diocesan Bishop Andres Bobola because he was considered to be a very religious and intelligent man with much pastoral experience. However, this position did not last long due to dissensions between Polish Catholics and Orthodox Russians living in Poland after the Russo-Polish Golden Party had been defeated in a popular uprising against the Polish Russifying government in 1846. Bishop Bobola resigned due to the conflict and was exiled by the Russian Orthodox Poles to the south of the country; however, before he left he appointed Father Jedrzejewski interim diocesan administrator until he returned or a new diocesan bishop was appointed. Father Jedrzejewski served as diocesan administrator from 1847 to 1850 when Bishop Alexander Kakowski was eventually appointed diocesan bishop. After Bishop Kakowski's appointment, Father Jedrzejewski returned to his rural parish of Wysoka Wielkopolska and served as pastor until his death.

second sentence

O Saint Dominic Jedrzejewski,

that in life you were an example of virtue and holiness,

and now you enjoy eternal bliss in heaven,

I beg you to intercede before God for us.

We want to follow your example and achieve holiness,

but sometimes we lack faith and hope.

O Saint Dominic, help us to firmly believe in the love of God,
and to wait patiently for his grace.

Teach us to love our brothers and sisters as you loved them,
to forgive their offenses and pray for them.

to announce the Gospel with audacity and charity.

Amen.
