What are the deadly sins?
Mortal sins are those that are committed deliberately, being aware, are done continuously. And most importantly, they are the sins committed without a subsequent act of repentance.
Every sin that is committed without an act of contrition and exposed to God in the light of Jesus Christ accumulates in the heart of man and hardens it. A hardened heart is filled with things that do not please God and therefore distances the person from the purpose that the Lord had for him, the scriptures tell us:
James 1:15 (KJV 1977): then the concupiscence, after she has conceived, gives birth to sin; y when the sin is consummated, produces death.
We as believers continually wage war against the evil desires of the flesh by the Adamic nature of man. If concupiscence or bad desires are not curbed, they lead us to sin.
And as the above quoted verse says, when we live to do nothing but evil, the final destination is eternal death.
The erudite writers of the Christian church of the first centuries like Cyprian of Carthage (200 – 258 AD) or the Catholic Pope Gregory the Great (540 – 604 AD). They made a classification of the sins, placing some of them as capital or main.
Thus defined by the etymology of the term capital derived from the Latin capitis which means head. In this way they define seven capital or deadly sins as the head of the other sins.
These seven main carnal evil desires of the Adamic nature lead man to commit other sins. The categorization these scholars made was to give an indication of the moral and spiritual seriousness of these seven sins.
The seven deadly or deadly sins
The seven deadly sins, considered deadly by the Christian scholars of the first centuries, were the following faults or vices that attack human morality:
- Pride: A fault contrary to the virtue of humility, pride makes the person haughty, believing himself to be superior and independent of God. The proud person trusts his own reasoning, this is very far from pleasing God.
- Avarice: It is distinguished by coveting or insatiably wanting to possess riches and positions. It is a fault contrary to the virtue of generosity, God loves the cheerful giver.
- Gluttony: It is the appetite or excessive desire to eat and drink. This lack is contrary to the virtue of temperance or self-control.
- Lust: It is a carnal desire to have sexual pleasure with someone other than the spouse. Lust is contrary to the virtue of chastity.
- Laziness: It is the desire to do nothing, feel lazy, not wanting to make an effort to do something or do it wrong. A lazy person is contrary to the virtuous person in being diligent, hardworking or ready to carry out a task or work.
- Envy: This lack leads the person to covet the success, possessions, virtues or talents that he sees in other people. The virtue of charity overcomes the sin of envy.
- The wrath: It is an emotion that, if not controlled, leads to resentment, to not forgiving and therefore to revenge. The virtue that keeps anger at bay is patience.
The Bible teaches us that love is the greatest of virtues, because:
1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (ESV): 4 having love is know put up with; is be kind; is not be envious, nor be presumptuous, nor proud, 5 or rude, neither selfish; is not to get angry nor hold a grudge;
According to the Bible, what are mortal sins?
Although it is true that in the Bible we do not find mortal sins categorized as the Christian scholars of the first centuries did. But, even so, any sin could be included as a consequence of one of the seven evil desires of the Adamic nature described above.
And in this sense the Bible teaches us that a life in sin without repentance, the final destination is death:
Romans 6:23 (TLA): Who only lives to sin, will receive death as punishment. But God gives us eternal life through Christ Jesus, our Lord.
This is the good news of Grace, Jesus Christ assumed the position of sacrifice for our salvation and forgiveness of sins. In gratitude for this love of God for us, let us keep a moral life in holiness, pleasing the Lord.
