It is not known by the whole world, the existence in Spain of more than a hundred volcanoes scattered throughout the map. The main volcanic area that the vast majority of people know is centered on the Canary Islands, forgetting that also throughout the territory of the peninsula you can find a large number of volcanoes.

We all remember the eruption in our country of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma in September 2021. Volcanoes are geological structures through which magma or a mass composed of molten rocks is expelled. This magma is divided into two components, lava and gases. Then we are going to explain what this phenomenon consists of, how many are in Spain and which ones you can visit.

How are volcanoes formed?

volcano eruption

The volcanoes, are geological formations with a break in the area of the earth's crust where the magma, gases and ash clouds are expelled. These sets of expelled elements come from the interior of the earth.

When these formations erupt, the lava comes out of the craters and accumulates on the surface. When these lava accumulations cool down, what we know as a volcanic cone is formed.

They usually form near tectonic plate boundaries., can occur because they are separating which causes holes to be created through which the magma comes out. Or on the other hand, because one of the plates has started to slide under the other.

Emphasize that the appearance of a volcano can also occur in areas where there is no movement of plates, these points are known as hot spots. The appearance of the volcanoes in these points is due to the fact that there are ascending magma plumes. One of the best known hot spots in the world is the Hawaiian area.

As we have said at the beginning of this publication, not all the volcanoes found in Spain are located in the area of the Canary Islands. The Spanish territory has about a hundred volcanoes scattered throughout the map, some of which remain active and many others extinct.

In the month of September of last year, 2021, in one of the Canary Islands, more specifically in La Palma, the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted. This eruption places this island as the eighth to suffer this event since records began. More than 50 years ago, in the Islands too, the last volcanic eruption took place in Spain. In the year 1971 in the month of October, the Teleguía volcano erupted.

In the national territory, 11 years ago the last volcanic eruption occurred, but it was not terrestrial like the vast majority, but in this case it was underwater. This event occurred on the island of El Hierro and caused a volcanic formation 400 meters deep.

La most famous volcanic area in Spain, it is located in the Canary Islands, but there are different areas volcanic to part of the Islands. These areas include Gerona, Cabo de Gata in Almería, Cofrentes in Valencia, Ciudad Real and the Columbretes Islands in Castellón.

Spain has more than a hundred volcanoes scattered throughout its territory, some of them active or extinct. In the next section we will see which ones are in one state or another.

Active, extinct or dormant volcanoes

explosion lava volcano

We have already seen that in Spain, there are a large number of volcanoes spread over different autonomous communities. But what we don't know yet is which of them remain active or not.

The active volcanos are called those, who can enter the process of eruption at any time. Most volcanoes are in this dormant state. The time that this eruptive activity lasts is not known for sure since it can vary in days, months or years.

asleep or inactive, is used to refer to those volcanoes that have signs of activity but have remained inactive for a very long period of time. I mean, yes it hasn't had an eruption in centuries is classified within this group.

Finally, those known as extinct are those that have not undergone eruptive activity in the last 25000 years.

In rural areas of India, families in charge of a blind minor frequently isolate and deprive him/her of the care and attention they provide to their other children; such situation becomes even more severe among lower-caste families, orphans and if the blind child is a girl. Canary Islands, active volcanoes are located. In this area since records have been recorded, around twenty eruptions have been recorded. Some of these eruptions have been of great intensity and duration.

In another Spanish municipality, such as Girona, two volcanoes are also located is active state such as the Santa Margarida in the natural park of the Garrotxa volcanic zone and another of them is the Croscat which is also part of this volcanic zone.

The Santa Margarida volcano is unique in the town of Olot, Girona. It is a very unusual formation to see, because it is very different from those named above since it hardly seems that we are facing a volcano as can be seen in the image. Inside the crater of this volcano is a hermitage.

Croscat-Girona

This volcano is located in La Garrocha, specifically in the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. In this park, there are 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows. Therefore, it is a place that you should definitely not miss.

The volcanoes in Spain do not have much activity, but with the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja a few months ago we have realized that when you least expect something as beautiful as it is destructive it can start.

We recommend that you inform yourself of those volcanic areas that you are interested in visiting, since all of them may not be open to the public. Enjoy, and marvel at these geological formations that we have in our country.
