THE CREATION OF MAN ACCORDING TO THE MAYAS

Legend of the Creation of Man According to the Mayans

In the Council Book of the Mayan civilization, better known as the Popol Vuh, it is mentioned that there is a legend about the creation of man according to the Mayans, at the beginning of all time, there was neither the Earth, nor men, nor much less animals. In the beginning, only the famous Progenitors Tepeu and Gucumatz were found in the cosmos, at that time the Earth was simply a solemn darkness covered with clear water.

These were sheathed in imposing colored feathers, for this reason, they were known as "Feathered Serpents". The Progenitors decided to put an end to such loneliness and, after much consideration, decided to undertake the creation of something new out of the prevailing darkness.

The person responsible for carrying out all the plans was the Heart of Heaven, named Hurricane. Tepeu and Gucumatz were in charge of removing part of the water, so that the earth would emerge. Furthermore, they commanded the darkness to yield to the light of day. From the mist came the hills, the valleys and the rivers, after the passage of time the trees and the rest of the vegetation appeared.

Due to his extraordinary invention, the Progenitors were more than happy. For this reason, they incorporated mountain animals into their creation, in order to be the guardians of the forests, these were the birds, deer, snakes, pumas and jaguars. Later, also to the aluxes, mythological beings similar to elves, and much larger animals: elephants, tigers, deer, etc.

Each was given a home of their own. However, everything was still absolutely silent, so they gave him the power of voice. These no matter how hard they tried, they could only shout, scream or sing, for nothing in the world were they able to speak. Though the gods wanted them to worship and pay tribute to them, they couldn't.

THE CREATION OF MAN ACCORDING TO THE MAYAS

First humans made of clay

Because of the above, the gods made the decision to form the first human beings in history, completely out of clay. At that time, they were designed with the main objective of being able to worship them and mention their name, they were a new level of animals, with a little more intellect.

Although they wanted a prospect similar to them, thinking individuals, they were unable to achieve it in any way, because although he articulated words with his mouth, what came out of it had no coherence. Likewise, the material was not the most suitable for this task, since it fell off, fell apart very easily if rain fell on it, and changed its shape quickly.

wooden humans

Realizing that their creations did not speak properly, nor could they move or see, they chose to destroy them and try a different material, wood. They got together and chose to make them this way, so that they would be better than their predecessors and much stronger. Indeed, they could already talk, move, and walk, but they were completely lacking in understanding, wisdom, and most importantly, memory.

They lived for a long time, and even managed to breed and found small communities, only that due to their lack of ingenuity, they could not last as long as they really wanted. They did not remember at all who were the ones who gave him life, to the point that they decayed and dried up completely.

After a new disappointment, the creators sent a horrific flood to Earth to take everything with it, including the wooden humans. Those who managed to flee settled on the outskirts of the jungle, and their descendants became what we know today as monkeys.

Corn men

For the third time, the Progenitors had to agree on how they were going to proceed with the creation of man. They met throughout the night, and when morning came they saw in the distance, the Earth full of hundreds of white and yellow ears of corn, which were brought before them by various animals: coyotes, foxes, parrots and crows.

For that reason, they thought it was a good choice to opt for the strong nascent cobs to mold the flesh, blood and muscles of human beings. The first four men were called: Balam-Acab, Balam-Quitzé, Iqui-Balam and Mahucutah. These, unlike the previous ones, were very grateful to each of their procreators.

They had the ability to see, hear and communicate correctly, they were very wise and knew about an infinity of topics, which the divinities did not like.

To prevent them from being too intelligent, and having knowledge about everything that happens in the world, they turned their eyes. In this way, they could only realize what was close to them and not really everything important that surrounds the universe.

After that, they were satisfied and proceeded to create the women and wives of the four men of corn: Chomihá, woman of Balam-Acab; Cahá-Paluna, woman from Balam-Quitzé; Caquixahá, a woman from Iqui-Balam and, finally, Tzununihá, a woman from Mahucutah. As the years passed, they reproduced, learned, evolved and established important civilizations.
