Susana Hernández, versatile career

Spain seems to be a fertile ground for the black novel. Apart from the historical and political genre, readers have been able to read the successful work of Domingo Villar, Cristina Fallarás, María Oruña, Clara Asunción García or Isabel Franc. Susana hernandez enters this list of celebrated voices of Hispanic noir.

Born in Barcelona, Hernández has carried out a very varied career, which starts from her studies in Image and Sound, musical criticism, voiceover, literary pedagogy and sports writing, to knowledge that is appropriate for a police author, such as psychology and private investigation. For some of her plots, she has even had the collaboration of the police, for greater narrative rigor.

Her career as an author has been fruitful in terms of competitions, obtaining the Cubelles Noir Award twice (2016 and 2018) and the City of Sant Adrià Award in 2015, as well as being a finalist in several other awards in Tenerife, Valencia and Salamanca. Specialized awards such as the LeeMisterio Awards have recognized her recurring character Rebeca Santana as the best of her genre.

Work of suspense, humor and sexual diversity

Santana has definitely been the workhorse of Hernández's novels. The protagonist of several of her adventures, she is a tough inspector with a sharp mind and a homosexual orientation who seems to reveal the influence of the American Jean M. Redmann and her lesbian detective Micky Knight. However, Hernández has denied this connection.

Dangerous curves (2010) Against the ropes (2012) and Pending accounts (2015) are her best-known novels, with Rebeca Santana and her partner Miriam Vázquez as crime-fighting protagonists. But the author has ventured into other plots without the company of her celebrated detectives, as in the wild wednesdays (2019) o May month (2020), harsh portraits of Barcelona's underworld.
