AMAZON MYTHS

Let's talk about the myth of the Amazons

According to classical mythology, specifically Greek, the Amazons were a community, made up only of female warriors, from ancient Greek: ᾽Amazons, singular Ἀμαζών [Amazōn]. These women were remarkable for their beauty and fighting ability.

They carried different weapons and were trained from an early age. In Greek culture, the Amazons were one of the enemies of the Greeks. In other words, many of the myths that exist explain that the Amazons constantly fought with different Greek heroes, making them look like evil characters.

Despite this, it has been determined that this was not the case. The Amazons were an army that had a single mission, to defend their people. One of the most impressive features of the Amazons, was the creation of their female society, for many, this concept was impressive.

The myth of the Amazons in the written tradition

The Greek historian Herodotus, located the region where this town was located near a border region with Scythia in Sarmatia, although, after that, they were located in Asia Minor. The reality of the Amazons is quite confusing, unlike other classic myths, the existence of the Amazons is questioned.

AMAZON MYTHS

While we commonly know myths and legends as fanciful stories born from the imagination of man, the myth of the Amazons does have real evidence. In the Eurasian steppes, there were several tribes that recorded how women were part of the army and even. They were in charge of defending the area where they were if the men were at war.

Thanks to several archaeological discoveries, the tombs of these settlers have been found. We invite you to read other articles similar to this one on our blog, we recommend you read Myths and legends.

Greek mythology and the myth of the Amazons

There are various myths about the Amazons, they differ a little from the stories we know today from the artistic world. In Greek mythology, the Amazons are the product of the union of the god of war Ares and a nymph named Harmonia.

Under that concept, the Greeks believed that the Amazons lived in Terma, a Region of the Dead Sea in Turkey. His town, was near the sea coast, this place was called Ponto Eucino. They had a monarchical hierarchy, it was indicated that the queen of the Amazons was Hippolyta, the people. In fact, it was made up of the union of several cities, including Smyrna, Ephesus, Sinope and Paphos.

The playwright Aeschylus described that the Amazons had lived in Scythia but over the years, they became a nomadic group that ended up settling in Themyscyra. Herodotus called them Andochtones, which basically meant male killers. This was because their society was made up of all women and it was said that they hate men, so they were in a constant fight with them.

Homer and the myth of the Amazons

It was not until Homer's Iliad that the name became anti anger (those who fight as men) exemplifying the fact that the Amazons were trained from youth to fight in wars. That is, as soldiers, a position that, according to the Greeks, was traditionally for men.

For many people, the existence of the Amazons is questioned for the simple fact that being a society made up of women. There was no way to reproduce, however, several myths explain that although men were not allowed to enter the village. The Amazons traveled several kilometers to Gargaros, where they had sexual relations to preserve their race.

AMAZON MYTHS

The Amazons did not stay in this tribe, once pregnant, they returned to their city. The male children of these warriors had various terrible fates, they could be sent to their fathers, abandoned to their fate or blinded and mutilated to serve as servants. The Amazons kept the girls who were raised by their parents, their education was based on the art of war, manual labor, hunting and fighting.

Greek heroes vs the myth of the amazons

Within the best known Greek myths of the Amazons, we find that the heroes Heracles, Bellerophon and Achilles had some encounters where they had to face the Amazons. Even the god Dionysus was involved in some of these adventures. Heracles, specifically, found himself involved in one of the greatest adventures of the Greek age.

He was commissioned to search for and steal the belt of the Amazon queen Hippolyta, this task was appointed by Eurystheus. To carry out this activity, he asked his friend Theseus for help, who ends up kidnapping Princess Antiope, Hippolyta's sister. This abduction has a terrible consequence, since it unleashed the invasion of Attica in retaliation for what Theseus had done.

There are different versions about what happens next, since some explain that Theseus ends up marrying Hippolyta by helping Heracles. While others assure that this never happens and Antiope, his wife, died during the invasion. The Greeks faithfully believed that the Amazons were to blame and that they were a symbol of bad luck.

The Greeks and their hatred of the Amazons

Although it is true that today we appreciate the history of the Amazons for what they are, courageous warriors who defended their power, the hatred of the Greeks towards these women is quite explicit in all the myths that were narrated throughout history.

The Amazons were seen as the enemy or even, if the story wasn't so dire, they were seen as some sort of antagonist. They did not particularly seek to confront the Greeks but if the occasion presented it, they were ready to kill them. Greek myths highlight several stories where there were military raids entirely led by the Amazons.

Amazon Attributes

They had a high knowledge of the art of war, handled multiple weapons and also had an enviable intelligence. On the other hand, despite the latent hatred of the Greeks for the Amazons, they greatly emphasized their beauty. Tall, strong, with white skin and black hair, the Amazons were perfect. His only flaw was his thirst for conflict, his need to fight presented a problem for the Greek people who were more accustomed to pacifism.

On many occasions, it is mentioned that the Amazons had a relationship with the goddess Artemis, this is due more to the fact that they worshiped her than to the fact that she had something to do with her creation. The warriors asked for the protection of the goddess, since being the goddess of the hunt, the Amazons felt quite identified with her.

famous amazons

When we talk about the Amazons, we make a complete reference to the people that made up this society, however, there were several famous Amazons in history. The myths narrate their stories and they managed to stay alive through the years.

penthesilea

Among the famous Amazons we can find Penthesilea, a formidable warrior known for participating in the Trojan War, defending the city with great courage. The tales of her battles were envied by all the warriors around the world, unfortunately, Penthesilea met a cruel end, as she was killed by Achilles.

Hippolyta

Another example that we can find is Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. Hippolyta was the sister of Penthesilea and she was known to wear a magical belt that gave her an advantage over other warriors. This warrior fought against various characters from Greek mythology, from Bellerophon, who had dominated Pegasus, to Hercules, who tried to steal her magic belt.

Hippolyta dies at the hands of Hercules when they face each other in battle. On the other hand, we have that as a people, the Amazons also fought in impressive wars, the best known was the one they led against Athens, this war was a retaliation, King Theseus had kidnapped the princess Antiope, sister of Hippolyta, so the Amazons charged against the unsuspecting town.

heroic cult

Although at the time, they were seen as terrible beings, the Amazons were revered after their disappearance. According to various ancient sources, the tombs of these female warriors could be found quite easily throughout what was known as the Greek world.

Many of them were found in Megara, Athens, Chaeronea, Calsis, Scotusa and Cynoscephalae. After their disappearance or extinction of their race, several statues were raised to pay heroic worship to these women throughout Greece.

Both in Chalcis and in Athens, there were places called amazonum, which were temples where an altar to the Amazons was created and worshiped. The young women of the time performed rituals where they danced with different weapons in a circle. This dance had been created by Hipólita and her sisters.

Amazons in art

In our modern culture, it is quite easy to find artistic references to Amazons, especially on television and in movies. However, these artistic samples were born in the Greek art of the archaic period. Many of the works of that time represented the Greek legends and myths.

With the works of art, you could see how the combat between the Amazons and the Greeks remained level, that is, even though they were painted as the enemy. At least, for a time, it was widely emphasized that they were as capable or more capable than the Greek heroes themselves. On the other hand, the evolution of art indicated a gateway to the belief that the Amazons did exist. This is because they were transformed to appear more human than the myths told, bringing them closer to the common individual.

Place of the Amazons in current museums

A small search of the existing artistic demonstrations shows how the Amazons were portrayed with their main characteristics and elements, there was not much imagination. Carrying a heroic pose, they were illustrated with various hunting and war weapons, revealing how very strong women they were.

The Amazons worshiped Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, so their image changed a bit to get closer to the already existing model of the goddess. With a fine dress that was attached to the upper part of the body, the Amazons lost a bit of that rough and masculine essence that characterized them so much.

Currently, in the British Museum, there is an art exhibition, where reliefs from the frieze of the temple of Apollo in Basas and other artifacts of the time are shown, where both the image of artemis and the image of the Amazons can be seen.

What do historians say about the warriors?

In general, the historians of the Greek or Latin culture accepted the existence of the Amazons and even included them in many of their stories.

Herodotus was the first historian who dedicated himself to speaking and describing the warriors, this he did in his book Histories. There he describes the history of the Amazons a little differently from what we know today. In it he explained that it was a group of fugitives who tried to cross Lake Meotida and later managed to reach Scythia, making this area their home.

Sticia was a region known for its cliffs, which allowed this nomadic group of women to seclude themselves from other societies. They adopted a life dedicated to hunting, fishing and looting, the city of Esticia was not uninhabited, in fact, there were several inhabitants who could not withstand the continuous attacks.

More on Herodotus and the Amazon myth

The Amazons agreed to marry the young men of the town, as long as they could maintain their lives in the same way. By integrating into society, the population of warriors grew, their customs were taught to their descendants and little by little, that group of nomads became what is now known as the Amazons. Herodotus pointed out the following reasons for the Amazons to maintain their customs and life:

“For us (the Amazons) it is impossible for us to live among their women, they were raised in a way that we do not understand, while they were taught domestic chores, family care and even innocence and decency, we they taught us to hunt for our food, to use weapons, to protect the innocent, and to ride horses. The abilities that they have we ignore them and what we do, they think it's crazy "

More of the Amazon myth and ancient historians

Herodotus's description ends when he explains that this mixed group (warrior nomads and village youths) settles a little beyond the Tanais River, in what is now known as the Don River. Their progeny were the Sarmatians, who fought with the Scythians, who were in fact their distant relatives, against the Persian king Darius I in the XNUMXth century BC Herodotus physically described the Amazons as:

“Beautiful women who did not have a right breast, since it was cauterized when they were babies. The mothers placed a bronze object whose sole purpose was to stop the growth of the breast, this was done so that they could use the weapons more effectively, the strength of the chest, then it was directed to the shoulder and arm on that side, giving them more strength than the common woman or man”

Other stories

Although Herodotus was the first known historian who spoke about the Amazons, the reality is that there were many historians who speak on the subject. During the time of Alexander the Great, it is recorded that he received a fleeting visit from the Amazons when he was conquering Asian countries.

This procession had 300 warrior women, who dedicated themselves to marching for 25 days with the sole objective, that one of them actually become pregnant with him. However, many of the biographers who have dedicated themselves to writing about Alexander the Great questioned whether this event really happened or if it was just a made-up story to give Alexander's name more power.

The Amazons and the Romans

Not many people know about the stories that involve the Amazons indirectly. This is due to the fact that many of his roles, not being leading roles, were erased from history. In Roman historiography, the Amazons represented an important position. During a discussion in the Roman Senate, Caesar recalled the invasion that the Amazons had made in Asia.

This fact inspired the Roman troops to fight and live under the teachings of the Amazons. Supposedly Pompey Trogus paid a lot of attention to the way the Amazons fought, taking an interest in their combat strategies and trying to apply them on his own battlefields.

Other written references to the myth of the Amazons

Among other historians we have that Diodorus explained the story of Hercules defeating the Amazons in Themyscira, while Philostratus tried to locate them in the Taurus mountains. On the other hand, Ammianus explained that they were east of the Tanais River and that they were neighbors of the Alans, and Procopius explained that they were in fact in the Caucasus.

Although many historians doubt their existence, even in modern times, the vast majority agree to list them as important historical figures during late antiquity. Several fathers of history and mythology sought, for years, to try to eliminate his trace, however, it was almost impossible.

From the most fanciful stories to real society, the Amazons represent a large part of the history of our culture, accepting their existence or not. Culturally, their history impacted entire societies and today, although we remember them as a simple story from the past, antiquity shows us their importance for different populations.

AMAZON MYTHS

Amazons in literature

Describing all the books and works that refer to the Amazons is almost impossible. Since their first mention in Greek mythology, various authors have discussed the existence of the Amazons, describing their behavior, strategies or the way they functioned as a society.

Despite this, there are several important mentions that can be made, about famous authors who have spoken about the Amazons. During the XNUMXth century, Marco Polo wrote a book titled Travel Book, where he recounts his entire journey through Asia. There he mentioned the existence of an island inhabited only by women, however, he does not specify that these are the Amazons, since he does not make any reference to his abilities.

The Renaissance and the warriors

On the other hand, during the European Renaissance, the Amazons were a point of focus for medieval and Renaissance authors. They followed the opinion of Pliny the Elder, who had described acknowledging that the Amazons had invented the warship. This fact is related to the sagaris, a weapon very similar to an ax that was associated with the Amazons, but that was also used by nearby tribes.

Paulus Hector Mair, declared that this was impossible, since he did not believe that such "manly" weapons were invented by a tribe where only women lived. Opinions about the Amazons were very diverse, while some authors praised their society, others believed its existence impossible.

AMAZON MYTHS

Ancient and medieval literature

the renaissance writer John Boccaccio, dedicated two entire chapters to the Amazons, specifically to the queens Lampedo and Marpesia, in his work By Claris Mulieribus, which is translated into Spanish as "Of Famous Women" in 1374.

The image of the Amazons through literature is changing a lot, the original image of the Greek myth, had evolved as their existence had been questioned. The stories of these warriors are perhaps one of the most interesting branches in Greek mythology and literature.

There are millions of stories that describe the reality of the Amazons, few of them come close to the truth. Even if they really existed, literature transformed these women into an incredible person, who can be used according to the personal and individual criteria of the subject who decides to write about her.

Amazons in America

The myth of the Amazons is not only located in ancient Greece, but also traces can be seen in Hispanic society. When we talk about Amazons we can refer to two different entities. The first is about people who, according to Greek myths, were on a small island and the second, are women around the world who stood out for their skills.

Exploring a bit about the second entity, we find that several historians, archaeologists and even philosophers, determine that there were populations of Amazons around the world. They did not mean that they came from the same place or that they had the same origin, but that they were women who share similar characteristics, which is why the term Amazon was adopted to differentiate them from the rest.

It is believed that the American Amazons, that is, the Amazons that existed in America, existed in various important points of the continent. Among them the most notable are: The Antilles, the Amazon River, western Mexico and the province of Los Llanos in the Kingdom of Granada. These sites were recorded by Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés, Francisco de Orellana and other adventurers and colonizers as places where a society of war women was observed.

Americanized customs of the Amazons

These women took different forms depending on where they lived. Despite this, they shared similar characteristics. They were powerful women, usually naked, who defended their people with traditional weapons, bows, spears, arrows and clubs were the most common weapons. On the other hand, it was observed that the society where they lived was the women had the superior power, the men that existed were servants, the children were abandoned and the girls were raised to follow the example of their mothers.

It is for this reason and because of the similarities that they presented with the Greek myths, that these groups of women were also nicknamed Amazons. There are other references that speak about the American Amazons. For example, a copy of Dominico Gaspar de Carvajal, has a lot of information about these sightings and how these groups of women were managed, the chronicle is called "Discovery of the Amazon River"

The myth of the American Amazons: truth or fantasy?

This book begins with an expedition by Gonzalo Pizarro, when he was heading to the headwaters of the Marañón River, while searching for the cinnamon tree, and continues with an encounter with Captain Francisco Orellana, who had had a close encounter with this society in 1542.

As a curious fact, the current Amazon River, in fact, was called the Orellana River, since he was the one who had discovered it. However, finding an entire society living nearby, the river was given its current name.

Modern culture and the Amazons

Modern culture has taught us more about the Amazons of Greek mythology than it has about the actual Amazons on the American continent. There is a reason for that, the figure of women was eradicated in history, for many, it was impossible to think that a real woman, without supernatural powers, would be able to defend the people from her. Above all, it was not believed possible that a society where all women existed.

Despite attempts to erase history, many historians have found evidence that stated the exact opposite. The myth of the Amazons made a complete transformation, it was no longer just a story written centuries ago, but they were transformed into legends of real women and registered societies.

The American Amazons are not the same as the Amazons of Greek mythology, they are two different cultures that share the same characteristics. The need for survival and evolution explains how the warriors of the American continent were so similar to those of ancient Greece, even if they did not share the same knowledge.

  • Is Wonder Woman an Amazon?

Wonder Woman or Wonder Woman, as she is known in Anglo-Saxon speaking countries, is one of the most popular characters in the comics industry. Created by William Moulton Marston In the 40s, Wonder Woman seeks to save the world from powerful villains.

Its creation had a specific purpose, in the early 40s, the United States was suffering the consequences of World War II, to deal with the horrors. Moulton created a feminine power reference, the same, taking inspiration from the book The Superiority of Women and the ancient Greek myths about the Amazon warriors. The characteristics of this superheroine are:

  • Blue eyes and beautiful black hair
  • Athletic body
  • Supernatural strength and combat prowess
  • fighting knowledge
  • A uniform with the American flag.

Interestingly, Wonder Woman is a direct reference to one of the Greek myths, their similarities center on the princess of Themyscira. The only difference is that instead of fighting mythological beings from ancient Greece, this princess was Americanized to become Wonder Woman and fight the Nazis.

One of the reasons why we recognize Wonder Woman as an Amazon woman is that the number of similarities she has with the old myths is undeniable. The wonder woman stands out for being beautiful, strong and intelligent, these characteristics are the same that describe the Amazons in Greek myths.

  • Did the Amazons really exist?

It is very uncertain, if we investigate a bit of history, we will quickly learn that women's efforts are often overshadowed or used only as a symbolic reference. For years, the true role of women was hidden, this does not mean that they really existed, only that it is possible that if they had, their history was erased over the years.

Today, we know that there were women warriors, the clearest example, were the combatants in the Second World War, however, it is difficult to specify if the history of women warriors goes much further back than we can imagine.

Despite all this, there were people who claimed that the Amazons existed. For example, Francisco Orellana, one of the men who joined the explorations of the colonization of America, stated that when he arrived at the banks of the Marañón River, he saw warrior women trying to defend their town with bows.

This impressive image made him baptize the waters where he had seen them for the first time, the Amazon River. Determining whether or not this happened is impossible, but it's not that hard to believe either.

The culture of the indigenous peoples was very different from what we have today, their dynamics and teachings were able to create strong and brilliant warriors. • What is the origin of the Amazons?

When we talk about the Amazons, one of the most consulted questions is about their origin. Being a society of women, it is difficult to imagine how they were born, the answer to that, in fact, is quite simple. Since the myths tell us that these warriors were born from the union of the Greek God of war Ares and a nymph named Harmonia.

To give his creation a little more context, shortly before his birth, Athens was in serious conflict with Sparta, as both communities led very different lives. Sparta sought to be the winner of all possible wars to conquer more and more territory and Athens sought knowledge, they were faithful believers that the arts should be defended and protected above all else.

  • With whom did the Amazons identify?

Obviously with Sparta, both civilizations believed that war conflicts were the best solution, however, there is a clear distinction, the Spartans focused on supplying soldiers to the armies, while the Amazons were the ones who went to war.

Both in Sparta and in Themyscira, the city-state of the Amazon, homosexuality was welcome and they had no other option, they were populations where there was an abysmal number of citizens of the same sex, either on the battlefield or outside of it. .

Were real Amazons Spartan? Maybe or maybe not, as we have mentioned before, if the Amazons really existed it is impossible to determine their origin, so we will have to stick with the theory that explains Greek mythology.

  • Were the Amazons single?

The stories of the Amazons indicate that it was a society of women, that is, there were no men within their people. The myths about them tell us that the Amazons were female hunters who came to earth with a single purpose: to defend their lands.

AMAZON MYTHS

Additionally, other purposes were added, such as winning important battles for other peoples, living together as a community and preserving their society. Although it is true that at no time is much reference made to whether there were men on Themyscira, the reality is that they probably did.

The Amazons rejected marriage, but they enjoyed satisfying their carnal desires, in addition, they had the task of preserving their people. The myth of the Amazons breaks the common stereotypes of other myths, since it eliminates that mentality that the only destiny of a girl was to marry and have a family.

The narrations are quite clear, as a general rule, the Amazons lived single, however, there were some exceptions, for example, Antiope married Theseus some time after he kidnapped her.

  • Xena, the warrior princess existed?

During the 90s, a famous series called Xena, the warrior princess, was aired, it was set in Ancient Greece. It told the story of a brave young woman who found herself in complicated situations, many chapters of the series highlighted that Xena was a beautiful woman (with the typical characteristics of the Amazons) and that she knew how to fight with different weapons.

Lucy Lawless was the actress who brought this character to life from 1995 to 2001. Although no exact reference was made to whether or not Xena was an Amazon, it is widely implied that her character has various references to the myths.

Xena, as a person in real life, did not exist. There is no record of a person in history who was a princess by that name, much less an outstanding warrior. Xena is a character created for television, an iconic warrior who defined and inspired many young women of the time.

The Amazons in real life

While it is true that the actual existence of the Amazons is somewhat uncertain, there is a discovery that may prove their legitimacy. The Greek myth of the Amazons implies that it was a community of women, where they were trained in the art of war, creating perfect soldiers of immense beauty.

For centuries, it was believed that the Amazons could be the worst enemy for various heroes of the time, such as Hercules or Achilles, in turn, they are praised for their mission of defending their people with immense courage. Several historians have managed to locate this group of women in the Anatolian peninsula (Asia Minor)

The Termodont River empties there, which is believed to be the place where the city of Themyscira, the beloved state of the Amazons, may have existed. The historian Herodotus (484-425 BC) indicated that he believed that this site was located further northeast, in the Pontic steppes, this place today is what we know as Ukraine, southern Russia and a part of Kazakhstan.

This site, in turn, was the border between the Greeks and the Scythian peoples, the culture stood out from the others since it was based on nomadic herding and horse breeding (horses, additionally, are frequently referenced when speaking of the myth of the amazons)

Exploration

More than 30 years ago, in 1988, an archaeological expedition carried out in the Republic of Tuva managed to find an incredible find. It was a unique burial from the early Iron Age, this discovery was made at the Saryg-Bulum site.

When excavating, two burial mounds were found, they were joined together, forming an eight. This find was determined to be from the XNUMXth century BC. Within the burial mounds lay the traces of seven buried people, each of which was accompanied by multiple artifacts.

The most surprising thing for the Russian archaeologists was when they began to work on tomb number five, where they found a larch trunk coffin, whose lid was well closed. Due to the natural properties of this type of wood and the lack of air, the body buried in that tomb was very well preserved.

the DNA test

At that time, it was believed that it was the mummy of a child. However, three decades later and after various DNA studies, it has been revealed that the body found was not a child. Quite the contrary, she was a young woman, who could have been around 13 years old when she died. According to the study published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the other six skeletons, only three of them were women.

Even more surprising, was that they were buried as if they were riding a horse. Many people believe that the ancient Greeks had encountered the Scythians. These had dominated the Eurasian stage during the first millennium BC.

The Greeks may have been so impressed with their riding skills that when they were entombed, they took it upon themselves to relive that moment for eternity.

the amazon girl

The body of the girl found in the archaeological expedition was the most preserved. That was due to the conditions in which she was buried. Around the wreckage, it could be seen that she was wearing a leather headdress painted with a type of red pigment. In addition, she wore a coat sewn with the skin of a rodent native to the desert.

To support the coat, he wore an ornate leather belt with a beautiful bronze buckle. On the other hand, the girl's body was not alone. In her tomb, several artifacts could be seen, including a leather quiver with dates, the axes of which were adorned. In addition, several battle pickaxes and a bow were also found.

AMAZON MYTHS

Of the three women's bodies that were found, only two had these battle instruments. Due to the way they were buried, it was determined that these women were Amazons or at least, the closest thing to this population.

Within the cemetery known as Devita V, up to 19 mounds can be observed. Most of these are already hidden, this is because the region is currently a plowed agricultural area.

A few centuries ago, these tombs were covered by interlocking oak blocks. They rested on 11 pillars or at least, that's how you imagine that area.

The buried women

The women buried and found in the archaeological expedition had different ages. Two of them were young, estimated to be between 20 and 29 years old. While the others between 25 and 35, in addition to the young woman of 12 or 13 years and a woman of 45 years. This last fact is quite curious. The woman had surpassed the life expectancy of the Scythians, which was 30 to 35 years.

Unlike other burials, that of this clan of women was done simultaneously. Which could indicate that they all died around the same time. Many of the pieces that could shed some light on the mystery are missing. Tomb raiders stole various fragments of clothing and artifacts from the tombs.

Despite this, the woman's body was buried in the position of a horseman. That is, as if she were riding a horse, it was intact. Inside the grave of the older woman, a crown, a dagger and several iron date points were found. The curious thing is that such points were quite particular since they were forked.

Amazon Privileges

Far beyond what can be theorized, this find may imply that perhaps the Amazons did have a real place in history. Even if it is not with the fanciful story that everyone already knows them.

For our history and culture, this discovery could imply a change in our history. In fact, it would allow the human being to begin to question the reality of the myths.

If the Amazons existed, what other creatures, heroes or fantasy characters were part of reality?
