Characteristics of Jesus' Leadership

Christ is the head of his Church, so every Christian leader must be an imitator of Jesus. The jesus leadership in his time as a man on earth he consisted in developing his ministry of service and love of others.

Since the beginning of his ministry, Jesus showed signs of being a leader with a tireless attitude of bringing the message of the Kingdom of God to the people. In this way the Lord fulfilled the mission entrusted by his Father in Heaven.

Jesus walked through different cities in the regions of Galilee, Samaria and Judea. All these regions belonged to the territory of Palestine at the time.

If you want to better locate yourself in the historical context of these regions, we invite you to enter the article: Map of Palestine at the time of Jesus. In this link you will be able to understand even more the value of the message and the greatness of the Lord.

The authority in the leadership of Jesus

Jesus always gave a sign of authority when he walked from here to there through all the regions he visited. But that authority was never a sign of wanting to be superior to others, as we can well read in the word of God:

Matthew 20:25-28 (NKJV): 25 Then Jesus called them and said to them, "As you know, the rulers of the nations rule over them, and the powerful impose their authority on them. 26 However between you should not be like that. Rather, the one of you who wants to become great will be your servant; 27 and whoever wants to be first among you will be your slave. 28 Imitate the Son of Man, who did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many..

Jesus having all the authority granted by his Father God, both in heaven and on earth. Jesus disapproved of how the political and religious authorities of the time exercised his leadership. Politicians acted tyrannically with the people and speculated with their economies. For their part, the religious leaders were respectful of persons, despising the humble, the dispossessed, the sick, transgressors of the Law, gentiles, among others.

Here are two verses that reflect the authority Jesus manifested in his leadership:

Matthew 7:28-29 (PDT): 28 When Jesus finished saying this, the people were amazed at his teaching, 29 because He taught them as someone who has authority and not as the teachers of the law.

John 5:26-27 (NIV): 26 Because God, my Father, has the power to give life, and he has given me that power. 27 He has also given me authority to judgefor I am the Son of man.

Jesus has only one identity

Jesus was aware of who he was, his identity is that of the Son of God and where he went he presented himself in this way, as the Son of Man. He always kept the same face and posture, faithful to the teachings of his Heavenly Father.

Jesus was always a man without mixtures, in the same way that God wants us to be his children. Faithful to a single Lord, following all his precepts and not just those that may suit us.

A servant of God must stand his ground everywhere and before all people, be faithful to the gospel and never be ashamed of it. The path to follow Jesus is very narrow, so one must be very careful not to stray from it.

You have to always stay in intimacy with God, so as not to give the devil an opportunity to make use of his tricks that divert our gaze from Christ. The example is given to us by Jesus himself who was tempted by the devil after 40 days and 40 nights in the desert, when he felt hungry, see Matthew 4: 1-11, Mark 1: 12-13 and Luke 4: 1-13.

Jesus at all times showed a single image and a single identity. An identity that was only identified by people who had a heart similar to the Lord. On one occasion Jesus asked his disciples: Who do people say that I am?:

Luke 9:19-21 (NIV): 19 The disciples answered: –Some say you are John the Baptist; others say that you are the prophet Elijah; others say you are one of the ancient prophetswho has risen. 20 after Jesus asked them: – doAnd what do you think? Who I am? Peter replied: -You are the Messiah that God sent. 21 But Jesus commanded them to all that nor tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

The foundation in the leadership of Jesus

Jesus based his teachings on what he saw his Father doing and hearing, this made him defend himself well and opportunely when he was questioned by the men of his time. So this was a very distinctive characteristic of Jesus, knowing the word of God very well.

Furthermore, he was not only a hearer of the word, but he was also a doer of the word, which gave Jesus authority. This new way of teaching filled the people who listened with curiosity:

Mark 1:27 (PDT): Everyone was stunned and began to ask each other: –What's going on? This man teaches something new and does it with authority! He can even give orders to the evil spirits and they obey him! –

The facts of Jesus supported and guaranteed his words, they were not teachings of pure verbiage. But Jesus taught with facts, and he was wise enough to understand the type of audience, to know what he had to say and how he should say it.

Jesus was strategic in his way of teaching, depending on whether they were his disciples, Gentiles, Jews, the religious priests and scholars of Jewish law or whether they were the political authorities of the time. The Lord Jesus always knew how to knock down every false argument that was made against his leadership with the truth, which is the word of God. He is still with us now reading the Teachings of Jesus of yesterday, today and forever.
