Synopsis of Cañas y Barro

Canes and clay, takes place in the Valencian Albufera at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. The plot unfolds through the stories told by members of the Paloma family (grandfather, Uncle Paloma, father Toni and finally grandson Tonet).

Tonet, described as lazy and indolent, stars in a love story with his childhood friend, Neleta. But it ends when he is forced to leave El Palmar, to serve in the war in Cuba.

In his absence, Neleta marries a rich tavern keeper and prominent former guard, Paco Cañamel, who gives her a high social position in the Albufera, leaving behind the poverty she once had.

However, when Tonet returns from Cuba, he and Neleta get back together, here they begin an adulterous relationship that triggers the conflict of an unwanted pregnancy and the outcome of their actions.

Writing and Style

Canes and clay, was written in 1902 by the Spanish Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. It was the last of the Valencian novels made by the author. The story portrays what the society of the time and place was like with great precision, hinting at the costumbrista practices of its characters and the application of the naturalistic movement in his writing.

Reading it reveals a conception of feminism on the part of the protagonist, Neleta, in terms of the independence of women in favor of free sex, although this is currently questionable, given that her actions at the end of the novel reveal a sacrifice very high for that "sexual freedom".

However, it should be noted that "El Palmar" was an area of decadent conditions in terms of its economy, health and even transportation. For Neleta, all this was a delay. Her priority was to be good with herself and have the freedom to do what she wanted with no strings attached.

Other works of the author

  • Between orange trees (1900).
  • Blood and Sand (1908).
  • Mademoiselle Norma (1927).
